The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer, Ezra Chiloba, has said his commission is considering scrapping the Sh1.3 billion electronic voter identification devices bought just before the 2013 polls and seek more money to buy new equipment.

Speaking on Wednesday, Chiloba said some of the gadgets used in the last election will be abandoned and new ones bought.

“Yes, some of the gadgets used in the last election will have to be abandoned,” Chiloba said

He also said the commission will do a total overhaul of its ICT infrastructure to avoid a repeat of what happened during the 2013 poll.

“We are reviewing our ICT infrastructure for elections and may purchase some and boost the performance of others,” said Chiloba.

Also targeted for replacement are the electronic results transmission systems that broke down, forcing polling officials to revert to manual voter identification and communication.

The CEO said he will ensure all systems are in place to see to it that the 2017 election is free and fair.
