The war against Somalia-based terror group, Al Shabaab, has taken another twist after it emerged that the militants have now invaded our prisons and are recruiting from there.

This was revealed by Bahati MP, Kimani Ngunjiri, who said youths are being recruited into Al Shabaab while in a Nairobi remand prison.

Speaking yesterday, Ngunjiri told reporters that he has evidence that Kenyan prisons have become recruitment grounds for Al Shabaab.

He noted that the youths who are being arrested for petty offences and heavy bonds imposed on them end up joining Al Shabaab while in prison to raise the money.

The Jubilee legislator called for immediate investigations into the matter to avert a scenario where our prisons will be in the hands of terrorists.

“I have credible information that once they are remanded after failing to raise the bond they are recruited into terror networks. The Government should wake up," the MP, who refused to name the prison involved, he said.

Ngunjiri divulged the information to the media first saying the police are themselves conduits for Al Shabaab and therefore cannot be fully trusted.
