Suspended Deputy Head of Mission at Kenya’s embassy in South Africa Jane Waikenda has been posted to Algeria despite being among officials suspended after names appeared in list of shame.
Waikenda who escaped the anti-corruption dragnet while working at Immigration, where she faked illness, had been posted to South Africa to evade criminal culpability.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission had narrowed on her for irregularly issuing work permits to foreigners when she was Director of Immigration.
The inquiry reportedly revolves around issuance of around 300 work permits in October 2013, which the EACC suspects were irregular.
According to a confidential letter dated April 19, written by Foreign Affairs PS Karanja Kibicho, she is expected to report to her new station, Algiers, on or before July 1.
Waikenda, a close confidante of President Uhuru, is the first of a number of officials expected to return to their stations after the dust of ‘fighting corruption’ has settled. She is mother to Michael Waikenda, a TNA youth leader.
When she took over at immigration, it is alleged she forced all the civil servants to have a copy of the TNA manifesto. She also alleged to have suspended a number of senior officials who didn’t come from her tribe in what she claimed was ‘cleansing’ the immigration department from ghosts of former immigration minister Otieno Kajwang.
Her posting, despite being under investigations, dismisses all claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta is genuine in fight against corruption. It vindicates critics of the president who have all along accused him of shielding people around and closer to him accused of corruption.
