A section of religious leaders from the Kalenjin community have asked Deputy President William Ruto to step aside over allegations of corruption.
Addressing the press on Saturday, the leaders led by Fr Ambrose Kimutai of Segemik Catholic Parish in Chepalungu, Bomet County, said that the DP had been linked with mega scandals, the latest being the Sh28 billion tender for the construction of a new referral hospital in Eldoret and he should resign and pave way for investigations.
“The DP is on the record asking other prominent Kenyans linked to corruption to step aside. It is only fair that he also steps aside. He demonstrates to the country that anyone mentioned in a scandal has to step aside,” Kimutai said.
He said Ruto must “take the bold move” and clear his name.
“He must demonstrate that the Government is committed to fighting corruption and that all are equal before the law,”
The man of the cloth said that the country can only win the war on graft if high profile individuals mentioned in corruption scandals step aside for investigations to be conducted.
On the issue of gays and lesbians in Kenya, the priest criticised the DP for recently declaring that gays have no place in Kenya “since Kenya is a Christian nation”.
“Who told the DP that gays are not Christians? The Government must allow this group of people to enjoy their rights because they are humans too. If God made them that way, who should judge them?” the priest said.
