Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat said it was unfortunate that the church function was hijacked by politicians from one side despite an earlier agreement by all leaders to respect sanctity of the church.
“Some leaders came out guns blazing despite an agreement agreed on after two days of meetings with church leaders that politics would be left aside,” he said.
He said Governor Isaac Ruto stayed clear of politics to avoid polarising the event and dismissed those who believed that the governor was subdued as dishonest.
“Some people have gone back to Nairobi thinking they have subdued their opponents. Let them day dream,” said Salat.
“It is unfortunate that people cannot be trusted to honour even such a gentleman’s agreement and they want to be taken seriously as leaders,” said the Kanu SG.
Kanu through its chairman Gideon Moi together with Governor Ruto have on several occasions held joint functions in the region sending shivers in Deputy President’s camp that the two were working on a political alliance as an alternative for the residents dissatisfied with the Jubilee government.
Rift Valley residents have raised issues with the way the Jubilee government has handled farmers issue, Mau evictions and appointments to public offices that has tilted more to rewards to DP Ruto’s cronies in the region instead of merit.
Salat faulted government’s timing on eviction of squatters from Narok section of Mau forest during the rainy season, saying it exposed evictees to harsh weather.
Hundreds of residents who turned up yesterday at a funds drive presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Bomet had demanded Salat be given an opportunity to address them.
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Joyce Laboso, who was the master of ceremonies, was forced to bow to pressure during the funds drive at the Bomet Green Stadium for African Gospel Church after a Sunday service.
Salat also urged the Government to give subsidised maize seeds to farmers who suffered a total crop failure in the past planting session.
Salat added that tea farmers in the region needed assistance because of the falling prices of the commodity in the international market and may fail to services their loans.
