It’s an undeniable fact that William Samoei Ruto currently is Kenya’s 3rd biggest political powerhouse after Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta in whichever order preferred by their respective stream of followers.Some of us have been thinking that he will be the next Raila of Kenya’s politics after Raila.
Personally I’ve even been toeing with the idea that we(Opposition block) should steal him from the other side,support him for the presidency in 2017 and use him to return Kenya to Kenyans!The DP has been shattering such hopes every other second.
Having been politically born into,fed and bred in the KANU hegemony and fully moulded with the KANU ideology if at all there was any,it’s an open secret that Ruto’s most significant political turning point came under Raila and majorly at the instigation of Raila Odinga himself and his pool of insensitive and politically myopic sycophants.It’s in-debatable that Raila played a very big role in transforming William Ruto into the political colossus that he became in 2013 and shortly after.
When he left us here and crossed over to the other side,we were thoroughly punctured and all we saw was our political dreams being swept away by the winds of numbers into the horizon of history!And of course the rest as they say,is history.
Fast forward into post 2013 elections and the political colossus has steadily been receding into political insignificance.Under Raila,the DP should have learnt something on how to maintain political significance;His personal and human weaknesses aside,we must give it unto Raila Odinga that he proved to be probably the finest political schemer and political mobilizer of our time,under this our hard won political pluralism up until he became a paper Prime Minister in 2008!
In fact,if not for his inability to retain political allies and their constituencies,his seemingly idiopathic political “bad/no luck” and/or “bad omen”,and of course the heavy burden of clueless,reckless,careless,selfish and myopic gang of sycophants,Raila would have served as a president already!
One of the things that Raila has effectively utilized over the years to always remain significant in the political arena is the art of Rebellion.When KANU seemed a hard nut to crack,Raila left the Opposition and joined it.When he couldn’t have his ways,he rebelled against President Moi and punctured KANU,joined NARC and alongside other Opposition politicians, dethroned KANU from power in 2002,emerging as among the most powerful individuals in the NARC government despite being a mere roads minister.
When he felt shortchanged in NARC again,he rebelled against President Kibaki,teamed up with the Opposition KANU again and thrashed Kibaki in the 2005 Constitutional Referendum- a massive win from which he consequently built one of the most powerful political movements of recent times.
This movement would go ahead and thrash Kibaki in the subsequent general election of 2007 though Kibaki refused to leave power and Kenyans went for each other’s head until the Raila could not bear the sight of blood and roasted corpses anymore!Raila became a paper Prime Minister and this paper power made him loose all his senses,marking the beginning of the end of the enigma Kenya’s politics as it were!
In all the three Governments that Raila served,he always rebelled against the center thereby creating the perception of a “strong man” capable of standing on his own,or funnily enough,with the people!He remained politically strong and significant until he eventually felt he had become part of the center,and he began rolling backwards,or is it downwards?
William Ruto,having gotten into this Jubilee Government as it’s Deputy leader and with an almost equal share,should have borrowed a leaf from the good old Tinga and behaved like he had “equal share” in the Government.He should have created an alternative center- a center for internal political ventilation and a center for a possible exit axis just in case it becomes really necessary.
Otherwise if there’s one thing that will completely neutralize our deputy president and block his path to the presidency,it’s his loyalty to his boss the President-what he calls their friendship-the friendship that makes him stand for 3o minutes when his boss is speaking.This friendship,unquestionable loyalty and total submission to Uhuru Kenyatta is only paving way for Peter Kenneth or whoever may emerge as the Mount Kenya heir to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
His invitation over the weekend of “his friend” Uhuru Kenyatta to help him manage the Rebellion of Governor Issack Rutto of Bomet is a kin to a man inviting his friend to help him talk to his wife who doesn’t believe he’s is man enough.The friend ends up stamping his authority over your wife and you are never sure of what might follow especially with a stubborn wife.I saw the Bomet Governor Isaack Ruto and his Kericho counterpart Prof. Paul Chepkwony comfortably seated when everyone else including the DP were all up on their feet cheering the president on as he gave the gazeti ni ya kufunga nyama charade and I saw two true sons of the Kalenjins.
