A doctor from Sierra Leone infected with Ebola was flown early Saturday to the United States, where he has residency, to be treated for the deadly virus, medical officials told AFP.

The flight carrying Martin Salia left the airport at Sierra Leone's capital Freetown at 2:30 am (GMT), Brima Kargbo, the country's chief medical officer, told AFP.
Salia had been treating Ebola patients at Freetown's Connaught Hospital, he said.

The medical evacuation is being facilitated by the US government at the request of Salia's wife, an American citizen who agreed to reimburse all expenses, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

"Just as we have done in previous cases, every precaution is being taken to ensure the evacuation is completed safely and securely, that critical care is provided en route, and that strict isolation is maintained," Psaki said.

The patient was "critically ill," according to a statement from the US hospital where he will be treated, citing reports from health workers in Sierra Leone.

His exact condition would be evaluated when he arrived, said the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, but it said Salia was "possibly sicker than the first patients successfully treated in the United States."

The hospital, one of a handful equipped to handle Ebola cases in the United States said it was expecting Salia to arrive at 2:00 pm (2000 GMT).

He will be the third person treated there for Ebola. Both of the previous patients survived.

"We immediately started preparing the unit and notifying staff members of this possibility," Phil Smith, bio-containment unit medical director, said in the statement.

"We've obviously been through this a couple of times before so we know what to expect."

CNN had reported that Salia has several children.

There are currently no cases of Ebola in the United States, where nine people have been treated for the killer virus. Only one -- Liberian-born Thomas Eric Duncan -- has died from the disease on US soil.

Kenya Airways Thursday reported a Sh10 billion loss for the half year through September despite recording increased revenue.

The management blamed insecurity in the country and the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa for the results, the biggest to be announced in Kenya.

Analysts said they expected the airline to report a loss, but not in the magnitude it did. “We were suspecting that they were on a rough patch, but the reported loss was way bigger than we had anticipated. Generally, the airline business is volatile, but we didn’t expect this,” Mr Eric Musau of Standard Investment Bank said on Thursday.

BREAKING BAD NEWS
Total revenue for the period increased by 4.5 per cent to Sh56 billion, but it was outweighed by high running costs. The airline ran below capacity leading to an operating loss of Sh5 billion.

In his first investor briefing, new managing director Mbuvi Ngunze had a hard time breaking the bad news.

“Of course it is not a good feeling,” Mr Ngunze told the Nation in an interview.

The chief executive took office at the beginning of this month, succeeding Mr Titus Naikuni, who retired after heading the company for 11 years.

Mr Ngunze said the performance was aggravated by an impairment loss of Sh5.4 billion on depreciation of aircraft approved by the board for sale.

Mr Musau said this raises concerns among investors about whether the company could have other assets that are similarly over-valued.

The news saw the company’s share price at the Nairobi Securities Exchange drop by 15.34 per cent to hit a 12-month low of Sh7.60.

The company said regional insecurity had resulted in fewer passengers after a number of Western countries issued travel advisories against Kenya.

The airline also suspended indefinitely flights to Sierra Leone and Liberia due to the Ebola outbreak, resulting in capacity reduction of over 20 per cent.

While the company has put in place recovery measures, Mr Ngunze said, earnings for the full year are still expected to be below last year’s by more than a quarter.

“Second half-year results are unlikely to reverse the full impact of the first-half loss and attain results close to or at last year’s levels,” he said.

Mr Ngunze hopes that the country’s security situation will continue to improve to boost tourist numbers.

The chief executive also hopes to win the hearts of Kenyan travellers who, he said, do not support the airline though it is the national carrier.

A Nairobi court has jailed a 22-year-old woman for five years without the option of a fine for stealing a child.

Irene Adhiambo pleaded guilty to the charge of child stealing. She admitted that on October 26, in the Kiamaiko area of Huruma, Nairobi, she fraudulently took and detained the baby.

The court heard that before the incident, Ms Adhiambo had befriended the baby’s mother, who was new in the city, and pretended that she would secure her a job.

“On the day of the incident, the baby’s mother had left her behind in a relative’s rented house in Huruma — where she was residing with the relative — and gone shopping only to return and find the baby and the visitor missing,” prosecutor Noah Chemweno told the court.

In mitigation, Ms Adhiambo said she is a mother of two and begged for forgiveness, but Magistrate Enock Cherono ruled that the offence was serious and called for a deterrent sentence.

The child was traced to the woman’s house in Kawangware in Nairobi after a neighbour who had seen her sneak out with the baby alerted the police.

She has 14 days to appeal.

The football authorities in Equatorial Guinea have announced that the country will host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after an agreement was reached with the Confederation of African Football.

The country’s national broadcaster on Friday said the decision stems from the fact that the country has in the past hosted several delegates from CAF and the country's fast-improving infrastructure that is billed to be capable of hosting the tournament.

CAF has confirmed the development through it's official Twitter handle. "The Orange Africa Cup of Nations 2015 will be held in Equatorial Guinea. Tournament to run from Jan 17 to 8th Feb."

Equatorial Guinea, who had co-hosted the 2012 African Cup of Nations with Gabon, will replace Morocco - who refused to host the tournament over Ebola.

Morocco was replaced and red-carded from appearing in the tournament by CAF despite asking for the postponement of the competition over Ebola scare.

The tournament is set to run from January 17 to February 8

SHOCKING: Guess which Kenyans are on Africa’s top 55 rich list

Former powerful cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott is apparently the second richest Kenyan currently, at least that’s according to the latest Africa rich list by Ventures Africa.

The list of Africa’s 55 wealthiest billionaires has Biwott (net worth $1.1 Billion) at number 47 only second to industrialist Manu Chandaria ($1.7 Billion) ranked at number 28. The only other Kenyan on the list is the president’s mum Mama Ngina Kenyatta ($1 Billion) at number 51.

Biwott’s wealth is mainly from commercial and residential properties in Nairobi, London and Australia.  Last year, he sold his majority stake in Kenol Kobil, one of Kenya’s largest petroleum marketing companies to Puma Energy, a Swiss-based oil company.

Chandaria is the Chairman of Comcraft Group, a multinational industrial conglomerate employing more than 40,000 people across 45 countries on four continents.

Mama Ngina Kenyatta is East Africa’s richest woman with vast interests in real estate. She currently holds over 200,000 hectares of land in trust for her family. She also owns, along with her children, stakes in several of Kenya’s successful companies including Brookside, Kenya’s largest manufacturer of dairy products.

Surprisingly none of the men who have served as Kenya’s presidents (including Biwott’s former boss Daniel Moi) features directly on the list.  Some may however argue that Mama Ngina’s presence on the list covers for at least two of them – her husband, Kenya’s first president the late Jomo Kenyatta and her first born son, current President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt dominate the list of billionaires. Nigeria leads the pack with 23 while South Africa and Egypt both contribute eight each. In total twelve African countries are represented on the list.

Africa’s wealthiest individuals provide jobs for almost half a million people within the continent.

REMARKS OF RT HON RAILA ODINGA AT PARTY CONSULTATIVE MEETING IN OYUGIS, NOVEMBER 14 2014.

This meeting is the first in a series we intend to hold with our elected leaders into the first quota of 2015 as part of the mid term review of our performance.
These meetings should help us sort out thorny issues, consolidate our strongholds, perform better and prepare better for next elections.

Allover the world, ruling parties remain focused on retaining power. Opposition parties train their eyes on how to attain power and turn their ideals into policies. It is not any different with us.
Opposition parties acquire power by constantly critiquing government policies and offering alternative realities. The short and clearest path to power for opposition parties is that of showing that they could have done better, that there are better ways to govern a country than what is being offered.

That means our work should have been extremely easy here, with the many, many failures of the Jubilee regime. It is not a secret that Kenyans are making do with certainly the most incompetent and arguably the most corrupt regime the country has ever known.

Insecurity is at its worst. Under Jubilee, the economic environment has deteriorated rapidly especially for the poor. Inflation continues to rise; the exchange rate remains volatile.
Under Jubilee, Kenya is now de-industrializing. Cadbury and Eveready have recently closed shop in Kenya and will now sell products imported from Egypt. That means loss of jobs for thousands of youth.
Tourism is at its lowest, horticulture, tea and miraa sectors are all struggling to survive. In fact, the formal sector has more or less stopped creating jobs.

Jubilee has refused to reform the Police. Instead, it is reforming and militarizing the National Youth Service. Never in Kenya’s history has the government’s edict held sway over less of the country than it does now. In over half the country, the government’s authority is almost worthless.

There is clear attempt to muzzle civil society and the media. Donor supporters are being vilified. The country is surely on the path to the past.
Yet these many failures and our alternatives to them are not our supporters hear from us.

Instead, the loudest word we hear is either silence or a small but growing voice of those who say, we must work with Jubilee for the sake of development and to capture power in 2017.
From where I sit, I know supporting the policies of a failing regime can never be a path to capturing power. It is therefore my position that you are either with us or with them. You are for us or against us. It can’t be both. And we have rules that can be applied to deal with the scenarios.

This is about our future as a region and as leaders as much as about our country. How do we want our country and our voters to remember and judge us in two years time?
For those who don’t know, the best things ever to happen in our country in the last two decades never came from the government but from the opposition.

Multipartism was not a gift from the government. It is the oppositions gift to this nation. The Constituency Development Fund, which has put money and power in the hands of MPs, came from the Opposition. The Free Primary Education came from the Opposition as we battled and eventually defeated Kanu in 2002. The New Constitution and particularly devolution and County governments is the work of the opposition.
These changes were not brought by a battalion. They were forced on KANU by a small band of committed and inspired MPs who risked life and limb for the sake of us all.

We should feel proud that ODM and by extension CORD is the party that retains a majority of those patriots working hand in hand with a new crop of youthful leader.
A focused and committed opposition does and can deliver. To take over the Promised Land, Joshua was told to leave the many panicking soldiers in the camp and proceed with a fearless and committed few. The time has come for us too to take a stand, make a decision and draw the line.

And so we convened here to deliberate on these emerging scenarios and take a position as a party and a region before we can move to other regions to do the same. Our ultimate goal is to capture power in 2017 through better organization, better ideologies and better articulation of issues.

CORD LEADER
Raila Odinga

The Kilimani Mums Facebook group will host a mini skirt protest at Uhuru Park on November 17 at 10am in support of the woman publicly stripped on Wednesday for ‘indecent’ dressing, and in objection to violence and sexual assault against women.

In the incident at the Embassava bus top on Accra road, men believed to be touts ripped the woman’s clothes, kicked her in her private parts and called her ‘Jezebel’ for “tempting” them.

The video of the assault was caught on camera by a passenger and posted on the Jambonewspot website.

Kenyans are also expressing their disapproval of the act via #MyDressMyChoice on Twitter.

“On Monday, l shall join my wife, daughter and all the women who will do a peaceful procession,” Boniface Mwangi tweeted.

“Even if a woman is wearing next to nothing, no man has the moral ground to even lay a finger on her,” Anzaa Makena posted.

Christopher Kirwa wrote, “U support Embassava sick touts 4 stripping a woman? Wait till one day u see your mother, sister or daughter being stripped (sic).”

“County first ladies should join in #MyDressMyChoice. It’d make such an impact,” Mandi H wrote.

“If you don’t like how a woman is dressed, or anyone for that matter, the best thing is to look away,” Morilyn Wambui retweeted.

Frida Maskani said: “Violation of women will not be tolerated. Sign the petition.”

“A woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view. -Sophia Loren,” Kenyan Mzalendo posted.

Shamit Patel said: “Seriously.. @EstherPassaris needs to back the #MyDressMyChoice event and go after him. She’s got zero to fear.”

The assault also sparked a fierce debate on local radio stations some of those condemning it however warning women about their dressing.

“Stripping a woman is an act of cowardice but women should also consider their dress code when at public places,” a female Kiss 100 caller said.

CID Chief Ndegwa Muhoro on Wednesday said the matter is being investigated, Deputy IGP Grace Kaindi adding that stern action will be taken against those who stripped the woman.

Why Raila Odinga will Win The 2017 Presidential Election

If you are at all keen on African politics beyond our borders, you will know that Zambian President Michael Sata, who died in late October, was 77 years old at the time of his death. And you may also know that the late Sata only won the presidency in his fourth presidential bid, having lost in three previous attempts.

The interesting thing is that this is by no means unusual. The former President of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, also lost three times and only won on his fourth attempt.

And, of course, our own Mwai Kibaki, now in the second year of his retirement, lost two consecutive presidential elections, and was widely dismissed as a tired old man, before he won the biggest ever landslide in a presidential election in 2002.

All this amounts to a persuasive case that the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has never been better poised to win the presidency than he is right now.

Of course, it is only right that his many political opponents will seek to paint him as a serial loser, who will never ascend to the presidency. That is what you would expect to be said of a key political leader who has so much influence in some parts of the country, and is deeply resented in yet other parts.

But his supporters have little reason to feel uneasy. Raila is exactly where Kibaki was in 2001: he has controversially and repeatedly lost in presidential elections; he is no longer that young; and he is generally considered to have only one more attempt open to him, if he is ever to be the President of Kenya.

This is just the kind of thing that would make him an ideal compromise candidate, if one was being sought by the opposition – exactly as happened with Kibaki in 2002.

So, on what do I base my expectation of the political class finding itself in search of a compromise candidate?

Broadly speaking, it seems to me that the Jubilee coalition – like every other political coalition in the multiparty era here in Kenya – will take a very different form by the time the next election comes around.

It is in the nature of our politics that expectations are always too high among those who won the last election. And so there is bound to be widespread disappointment among the supporters of those in power. This always expresses itself in mass defections as the next election comes round the corner.

Of course, if President Uhuru Kenyatta was to declare that he was going to be a one-term president, and that he would support William Ruto’s presidential bid in 2017, then the Jubilee coalition would very likely be unbeatable. But to the extent that I don’t see that happening, I would say that this coalition is very vulnerable, indeed – just as previous political coalitions have been.

None of this is to say that both Uhuru and Ruto are not doing their best to live up to the expectations of the Kenyan public. Rather, it is that history is against their grand political project of ruling us for the next 20 years (10 years each).

With the benefit of hindsight, I would say that Kibaki’s second term in office was an aberration. And that – unknown to most of us – from 2002, as we moved out of the Moi era, we actually entered into a political dispensation that would be marked by single-term presidents.

Consider the facts:

Other than that he did not appoint Raila Odinga as the PM under the old constitution, and was also seen to have disproportionately appointed people from his own Central Kenya backyard to high office, what mistake really did Kibaki make that warranted such a huge drop in his personal popularity?

Consider the issue of education: Didn’t Kibaki fulfil his promise of free primary education? Were there any false promises about laptops in all primary schools?

Consider tourism and agriculture: Did we not have all these sectors booming for years on end, during Kibaki’s tenure?

Indeed, are not the current geothermal power mega-projects a legacy of the Kibaki years?

And yet none of this could save him when the elections came.

As South African retired judge Johan Kriegler famously said, we may never know who won in 2007.

But we can definitely say that if Raila came so close to beating Kibaki in 2007, then he will have even less trouble in beating the current incumbent who has none of Kibaki’s achievements behind him.

Watch Raila BLAST Uhuru’s Kenyatta hypocrisy in the ongoing Kibera upgrading programme. Raila revealed it was Uhuru and his people that failed to release funds for the Kibera upgrading programme during the coalition government. Odinga said he was happy that Uhuru had seen the light now by agreeing to fast track the programme as was started by his tenure as minister for Roads, public works and housing and later as Prime Minister and Kibera MP.

I want to make it clear so that trolls can have something to talk about. I am not for the abuse or violence against any woman. I don’t believe also that anyone should take the law into their own hands and judge and condemn anyone just on how she/he dresses.

That not withstanding, I believe that it is EXTREMELY foolish to leave the door to your banks open and blame thugs solely for entering. Just like we are told that security starts with us, the women who are stripped for being scantily dressed must also equally blame themselves for being careless to what the society thinks about how they carry themselves.

We can’t claim that we will hold every public leader to account when we can’t hold ourselves to account for our acts which leads to negative reaction from the public. If you want to blame those “conductors and the public” for stripping the “scantily dressed” woman, also try to ask why focus was on her while other women were not targeted.

It is foolish to think that people should be blind to your actions which might injure others. If you caused an accident, don’t blame others only, also blame yourself.

People are scapegoating and wannabe activists hope that this Embassava issue will see their career take off. Address issues with honesty. The woman was wrongly handled but she contributed to it by insulting and being arrogant to people who were peacefully complaining on how she was behaving.

Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua and estranged wife Josephine Thitu Maundu are embroiled in a bitter and ugly tussle over children and matrimonial property, The Nairobian can exclusively reveal.

So acrimonious is the split that Josephine, a pharmacist, claims they no longer live together and that she flew to Australia with their three children on November 6 to take a break from “stress and a failed marriage.”

The fight over ownership of the Westlands house and custody of the children appears to be the last straw for her. Josephine has in fact threatened to sue Mutua if he does not hand over all keys and property to her lawyer and vacate his staff from the Westlands home, which she claims he surrendered to her in a sworn affidavit witnessed by her advocate, Carol Wanjehia.

The allegations, which Mutua has dismissed as lies, are likely to widen cracks in the youthful governor’s carefully managed image since he introduced the beautiful Lillian Nganga as “The First Lady of Machakos.”

In a long email on her predicament seen by The Nairobian, Josephine says that when she flew out of the country, she appointed her younger brother, Moses Mutua Maundu, as the caretaker of their Grevillea Park apartment, with instructions to renovate and rent it out.

Word on the street is that Henning is from Esbjerg a seaport town in Denmark.

" Am so happy because this is the first time anyone has seen my importance in their life as theirs in mine. I was asleep and woke up in the morning to find an engagement ring on my finger placed there by my lover after 9 months of dating.  He loves my kids so much, you know, it is not easy to find someone who will love you and your children. The lady didn’t regret what she did because and courageously claimed that she was helping her sister by providing him with s3xual services.
