Surprise: Arsenal Has More Fans in Kenya Than Manchester United…

It is actually believed to be top in most countries in the world.

Consensus has been that Arsenal is second, while Chelsea or Liverpool takes third.

Well, new data released by Twitter tell a different story.

The social media site has released a breakdown of the clubs’ popularity all over the world, based on their own data. Using follower count and their countries, Twitter has concluded that though Manchester United is still the most popular club in the world, its following in certain countries is not as huge as believed.

For instance, Liverpool is the most popular club in the UK, but Arsenal takes London. However, it’s good news for Van Gaal boys as Manchester has been confirmed to be red.

In the US, Arsenal is the most popular, followed by Chelsea then Manchester United in that order. Arsenal also takes Canada, France and Germany.

In Africa, the gunners are top in Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria among others.

Manchester united meanwhile takes Tanzania, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, etc.

Chelsea also has a huge following, taking the lead in Egypt, Libya, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

There’s one big flaw with the Twitter data however. The report is based on the number of followers per country, yet the clubs do not have a similar number of Twitter followers.

For instance, there’s a nearly one million difference between the number of Arsenal followers and Manchester United followers, in favor of the north London club.

Here’s a breakdown.

Arsenal – 5.68 million

Chelsea – 5.49 million

Manchester United – 4.87

The red devils were however late entrants into Twitter, joining the microblogging site 3 years after both Arsenal and Chelsea. In contrast, Man United’s Facebook page has 64 million likes, twice as many as Arsenal.

The true data lies outside Twitter. For instance, a good test would be to compare the numbers at your local joint during an Arsenal game and during a Manchester United game.

Here’s the interactive map from Twitter showing the clubs’ popularity around the world. Zoom to Kenya or to the country of your choice.

The most recent was Rita Jeptoo, who is facing a two-year ban. She’s allegedly run into family problems – especially a contentious divorce.

This time round, Flomena Chepchirchir, who was runners up during the 2012 Prague International Marathon is one of the notable athletes making the list. She’s been given a six month ban by the International Association of Athletes.

The biggest casualty has to be Alice Ndirangu, who has gotten four years. Others include Elizabeth Chelagat, who won the 2011 Standard Chartered Nairobi Half Marathon. She’s also credited for her 2009 international success at the Disney World Half Marathon where she came closing at position one.

Emily Chepkorir, who won the Calgary Marathon in May last year also makes the list. The big poll is, what do you think of the rising rate at which Kenyan Athletes are being suspended from the track? Does that mean that our wins over the years have been ‘fake wins?’

Manchester United trail the Spanish giants in second position having moved up the log, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona filling in at third and fourth positions respectively.

According to a report released by accountancy firm Deloitte, Manchester United's income of £433million in 2013-14 left them behind Real Madrid, who brought in £459m, but ahead of third-placed Bayern Munich (£407.7m), Barcelona in fourth (£405.3m) and Paris Saint-Germain in fifth (£396.6m).

Real Madrid have now been the richest club by earnings for 10 years in a row. Manchester City (£346.5m), Chelsea (£324.4m), Arsenal (£300m) and Liverpool (£255.8m) are next in the top 10.
Newcastle and Everton squeeze into the top 20, with West Ham and Aston Villa just below them. Southampton are the 25th richest club in the world (on £106.1m), with Sunderland, Swansea and Stoke inside the top 30.

The rest of last season's Premier League teams earned more than the £80m necessary for a top-40 place. This was largely down to lucrative new 2013-16 TV deals which began to pour into club coffers last season. Austin Houlihan, senior manager at Deloitte, said: "This is testament to the huge appeal of the Premier League globally and the equality of distribution the clubs enjoy relative to their European counterparts."
