On Sunday, former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, took Kenyans by surprise when he said he is ready to travel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and defend Deputy President William Ruto who is facing crimes against humanity charges at The Hague.
The move which took Jubilee Government operatives by surprise was seen by many Kenyans as a political strategy to woo the Kalenjin community in preparation for his 2017 Presidential bid.
But what made Raila Odinga change his mind in testifying in Ruto’s ICC case?
According to the former PM’s close advisor, who requested anonymity to avoid reprisals from his boss, Raila decided to testify to fulfil a wish his late son, Fidel Odinga, shared with him some time back.
Fidel Odinga, who died last month under mysterious circumstances, was one of the many people who asked the former PM to use his international connections and make sure all Kenyans who were at the ICC are freed.
“Fidel was one of the few people in ODM who urged his father to use his international networks and make sure Uhuru, Ruto and Joshua Sang are freed from the ICC,” the source said.
He said Raila trusted Fidel so much and his offer to testify in Ruto’s case is one of the many things he wants to accomplish in honour of his eldest son.
