Blogger Robert Alai raised the matter after an eyewitness informed him of the unfortunate incident. Many others joined in calling national government officials to take action as more women revealed their heart wrenching mistreatment ordeals at the hospital while in the process of giving birth.
At least a dozen other women have since come out to relive what happened to them at the hospital, with one opening up on how she lost her first born son due to excess bleeding as hospital officials neglected her.
Lillian Aoko, whose death has caused the twitter anger, allegedly gave birth at the hospital but after birth received no care thus bleeding to death.
As at this morning, her lifeless body was still lying at her ward at the hospital. It is even shocking that Mama Lucy hospital has no morgue to keep dead bodies.
Even as her body remained in her ward, her ward-mate, another woman struggling with labour, wailed herself out as no help was coming her way.
Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia is reported to be away in China but has claimed the hospital is under the County Government of Nairobi.
Gov. Evans Kidero is said to be in Homa Bay to campaign for his friend Eng. Phillip Okundi who recently decamped from ODM to Kidero’s Maendeleo Development Movement.
But more shocking are the reasons behind poor service delivery at the hospital. Initially, the hospital was a national government facility but was transferred to the county as part of the devolution package for Nairobi County.
However, while a national government hospital, most of the staff came from a particular community but with devolution saw the change at the top management, which brought in ‘outsiders’.
According to a recent report by the Nairobi County government, revelations of sabotage was reported in order to force the hospital’s CEO to quit.
“There is enough manpower and medical supplies at the hospital but the services are poor. The CEO (Dr Julius Ogato) is not in good terms with the staff and most probably they could be sabotaging operations. I think that they want him removed,” revealed Mr Manoah Karega, Chairperson of the Nairobi County Assembly Public Health Committee.
The situation is so bad the health attendants at the hospital swore never to attend to patients from the CEO’s community. This neglect is what may have led to Lilian Aoko bleeding to death.
Ludicrously, the county assembly committee went ahead to recommend the removal of the CEO, a medical doctor, and the appointment of a person not a professional doctor, to let the hospital return to the ‘usual status quo’.
“There is need for an overhaul of the management if services at the hospital should be improved. The CEO should be replaced by a person who is not a professional doctor,” he said.
