Is Mike Sonko the Acting HE of State?
President Uhuru Kenyatta has left the Country for a one day visit to Arusha, Tanzania. As per the constitution the Head of State has to leave behind an acting President while he is away on official duties.
The President’s Deputy William Ruto is currently at The Hague attending his trial sessions and will also attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Ordinarily House speaker Justin Muturi is the third in line to the big big throne.
However on Wensday morning as Uhuru was departing for Arusha he was seen off by non other than Nairobi senator Mike Sonko and chief of defence forces Gen Julius Karangi, prompting speculation that Sonko was the acting president. Sonko and Uhuru were captured on TV walking on the red carpet together as General Karangi and others were hitting on bare ground.
Sonko got his kind of ‘power handing over moment’ just before Uhuru boarded. ‘Sonko’s power’ moment with the President comes just days after back street gutter press Citizen Weekly claimed that the Head of State had blocked Sonko’s cell number from calling his direct incoming calls.
The photos of Sonko and Uhuru at JKIA have put the weekiy Citizen gutter in shame. The story is believed to have been done after Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero splashed money through his errand boy and former the Star Journalist Steve Sangira to taint Sonko’s image.
The brief show of power was also a sweet revenge for Sonko to general after the 2014 Jamuhuri day story where it was rumoured that Karangi had blocked Sonko from welcoming Uhuru at Nyayo stadium. Sonko’s fan base was also worried after Uhuru was sneaked to a public event in Mathare without featuring Sonko in the itinerary were the popular senator was expected to be the host.
