Uhuru Signs the Draconian Security Bill into Law and Tells Kenyans to Read and Avoid Troube

President Uhuru Kenyatta has assented the contentious Security Bill into law and urged Kenyans to familiarise themselves with it in order to establish their roles in securing the nation.

At the signing at State House, Nairobi on Friday afternoon, Uhuru thanked the National Assembly for expediting its reading.

He guaranteed that the law, which was passed by Parliament amid chaos on Thursday, will not infringe on the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Uhuru dismissed the opposition’s objections to it saying that enough consultation and public participation took place before the Bill was presented to Parliament.

He said the law will enable security organs to pre-empt terror attacks as they will be more equipped and better structured to deal with the challenges.

“For the first time, security organs will be able to detect, deter, and disrupt threats to national security,” he said.

Uhuru asked Kenyans to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities so as to keep they and their property safe from criminals.

He further noted that in order to address the administrative loopholes that have furthered terror activities, security organs are being restructured and penalties for those who contribute to terrorism stipulated.

The law was amended following proposals by stakeholders to the various Parliamentary committees.
